Since the mid-eighties, the pool of traditional foster families has been shrinking. Child welfare agencies started looking to relatives or people connected to the family as an alternative to foster parents, and family members started raising kids - but didn’t get the state support that foster parents did.
Obesity prevention efforts in schools yield some success
Obesity is still on the rise among California students, but after years of prevention measures in schools, the rate is slowing, new research shows.
Researchers at Columbia University cooked up three treats: zucchini chocolate chip bread, broccoli gingerbread spice cake, and chickpea chocolate chip cookies in order to figure out if children would eat desserts with veggies inside.
The take-home message, at least from this study: “You don’t have to hide vegetables in food to get kids to eat them,” Lizzy Pope, dietitian and PhD student said. Instead, she says, telling children there’s a vegetable in what they’re eating might not be a bad idea at all. Especially if it’s a broccoli gingerbread spice cake.

Legislator Wants Food Trucks Kept Away From Schools
A bill under consideration in the state Assembly would prevent mobile food vendors from operating near schools. It’s intended to stop kids from buying junk food, but owners of upscale food trucks say it’d impact their sales to adults. Reporter: Nina Thorsen
Obese children outgrowing kids’ clothing and furniture
Over 200 California schools are joining a new federally-funded effort to provide three meals a day to children from low-income families who also attend after-school programs across the state.
This new effort is directly funded by the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act, a bill passed by Congress in 2010. The legislation allows after-school programs to receive federal funding for supper at the same rate provided for free and reduced-price school lunches. To be eligible, the after-school program must have an educational component, such as homework tutoring or a class on health and nutrition, and at least half of students served must qualify for free or reduced-price meals.
A review paper published today in the journal Pediatrics evaluated the evidence from many studies on this topic. And it concludes that changing a child’s diet is usually not enough to effectively treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.
“[Diet’s] main role in my clinical practice is as a complementary treatment,” Benjamin Prince, a psychiatrist at Massachusetts General Hospital tells us. That means kids with ADHD usually need medicine and good diets.
But what makes a good diet? Here are three tips for kids on the ADHD spectrum from the experts:
- Eat a protein-rich breakfast.
- Cut back on sugary treats and processed foods
- Fish oil and omega-3 supplements
In Tokyo, children design the city of their dream and participate in post-earthquake urban planning. They started with the streets and talked about the layout of buildings, housing, and retail.
